When the summer rolls around every year, I embrace the season by returning to simplicity. Longer days and warmer nights mean patio time and chilled glasses of wine. My summer afternoons and evenings are spent slowly, as vacation should feel. How do you spend your summers? Today, I’m sharing my summer go-to’s and rituals that elevate my life and bring me joy.
Les Dauphins Côtes de Rhône Réserve Rosé
I love sipping rosé in the summer time on my patio, especially this one. The Les Dauphins rosé is a medium-bodied wine with a strawberry finish. It’s on the drier side and only $11 at my local Green Hills Wine Shoppe. It bought it at the recommendation of the sommelier. If you are ready to branch out from the ever-so-popular Whispering Angel rosé, try a bottle of Les Dauphins and pair it with some freshly sliced nectarines for a happy hour treat.
Natural Bug Spray and Citronella Candle
While I enjoy my magazine subscriptions year-round, I devour my monthly Health, Cosmopolitan, and Good Housekeeping issues in the summer on my patio. I get recipes and floral design ideas from Good Housekeeping, while Health and Cosmo are easy, light reading materials that pair perfectly with glass of chilled rosé. Since I am a mosquito magnet(seriously, though: I was once bitten 17 times on one leg in one sitting), I burn a citronella candle to keep them away as well as create a relaxing ambiance. To kick it up a notch, I also use Thistle Farms Natural Bug Spray with rose geranium oil. It is DEET-free and only $8. It smells refreshing and gets the job done!
Foldable Rocking Chairs
Charlie and I bought two foldable rocking chairs (similar) when we first moved into our apartment. There’s something so melodic and peaceful about rocking in a chair while reading a magazine. This is one of my very favorite summer rituals as it is my alone time. I am introverted and feel refreshed in my solitary time.
Summer Music Picks
Everyone has their go-to summer soundtracks. What is yours? I love listening to pop, rock, and singer-songwriter music to keep things light and carefree. If I want a romantic, date night vibe, I put on Sara Watkins’ “You and Me” from her album Sun Midnight Sun. For summer afternoons, the entire Graceland album by Paul Simon plays on repeat, especially “Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes.” My husband’s favorite song for summer nights is Redbone’s “Come and Get Your Love, ” so we keep a Greatest Hits album on hand. What music do you gravitate towards in the summer?
Besides wearing SPF and smelling like the beach at all times (laughs), I love wearing a light body oil as my perfume in the summer. This hair and body oil by Oribe is a luxurious fragrance that I’m currently loving. I like to spray it on my shoulders and arms as a summer perfume. The notes of bergamot, jasmine, and sandalwood even catch my husband’s attention. Another body oil that I adore is the Comfort Oil-Vanilla and Patchouli. Besides using a body oil as my fragrance, I use a cooling face mist to set my makeup and make it last longer throughout the day. I won this coconut face mist by Little Barn Apothecary in a giveaway and love the tropical scent. While this particular face mist is no longer available, this $10 coconut face mist has rave reviews and is very similar. Do you like to use seasonal fragrances, too? Every time I catch a whiff of these scents, it takes me back to summer time!
Picnic Basket and Wine Cooler
For Sunday afternoons, my husband and I tote this fully decked out picnic basket to Arrington Vineyards, a winery near Franklin, TN. This particular set comes with the works: wine glasses, wine bottle opener, cheeseboard, plates, cutlery, tablecloth, etc. We registered for this when we got married (thanks, Mike and Marybit!) and love pulling it out for summer afternoons at Arrington. As for a waterproof picnic blanket, we love this striped one that my mother-in-law gave us for Christmas last year. Another go-to item we use at picnics is this $15 insulated wine bag by Scout. It’s perfect for toting around chilled wine, like the Les Dauphins brand I mentioned above!
Straw Bag and Pom-pom keychain
Carrying a natural straw bag is one of my favorite summer style tips. It’s classic and timeless for a reason. Straw bags are durable and neutral, even with a colorful pom-pom accessory. If you don’t already have this classic summer wardrobe essential, you can pick up this one from the Gap. I love pulling mine out every year and I update it with a scarf or keychain. I bought my $14 rainbow pom-pom keychain at Pom Pom, a whimsical boutique in Nashville. Do you also carry a straw bag this time of year?
Sun Peach Tea
There’s something so sweet and carefree about sipping on tea that’s been warmed and flavored by the sun. Pull out a pitcher, fill it with water, add a few peach tea bags and freshly sliced peaches (if you’re ambitious) in the sun, and wait a few hours. Come back to it later in the day and you have brewed sun peach tea! I like to drink it from a wine glass to feel like I’m sipping on a fancy cocktail. It is so refreshing and calorie free. Are you a sun tea drinker, too?
These summer rituals offer a respite from the daily grind. Simple activities like these help me enjoy and cherish the ephemeral beauty of summer. What are your summer go-to’s? Let me know!
