Four Fun Holiday Looks (lipstick included)

As I’ve loaded up my social calendar with ornament exchanges, seeing the Holiday Lights at Cheekwood, baking Christmas cookies, and attending my school’s annual holiday party, I’ve found that balance between casual and dressy holiday outfits. Let’s be honest: no one is wearing sparkly dresses to parties anymore. Dressing festive is about looking effortless and chic with a touch of whimsy. Think: high-low looks, like jeans and velvet flats. Or, a simple black turtleneck with a flouncy red skirt. While there are classic trends that I include every year in my holiday wardrobe (red lipstick, tartan plaid heels, green plaid), there are other trends that I’m embracing to create unique and memorable outfits. Keep reading for some affordable holiday outfits and makeup inspiration, as well as the looks I’ve served up this December!

Fur Coat + Beanie + Plaid Top +Metallic Lips

Let’s give a round of applause for this casual firewood prop in my catalog-style holiday photo  (laughs)

To stay warm and cozy, try throwing on a faux-fur or teddy coat. My Target white coat is from a decade ago, but you can find a comfy one from Nordstrom for under $100 here. A white furry coat can look too formal for daytime, but it can look a bit boho with casual pieces like a green plaid blouse and jeans.

You can find a similar plaid top here. I also love this high-neck red one.

Since I love to thrift to save money, I picked up this J.Crew plaid top from Thred Up for $15. As you can see, it looks like new and downplays the fur for daytime. I wore this outfit to my work holiday party last Friday night to stay warm at the fire pit with my hot cocoa!

To make my pale skin pop against the snow white coat and beanie, I reached for my metallic red liquid lipstick from Drew Barrymore’s Flower line. The $10 shade is called “Crimson Venom” and dries into a long-lasting matte-metallic finish. This shade is the perfect holiday red!

Red Coat + Velvet Top + Glossy Lips

Another cute coat option is a red wool moto-style for the holidays. Red pops on every skin tone and it just feels merry! I ordered a Holiday Style Goody Box from Thred Up and my stylist sent me a Ralph Lauren black velvet top for $15 and this Juicy Couture red wool coat for $50.  I squealed when I pulled it from the box! I’ve worn this look to the Symphony for the Home Alone movie in concert. I’ve also cheered on the Predators at a hockey game in this warm coat. If you are searching for a red coat full of Christmas cheer like mine, you can find a red moto-style one here for $129.

I’ve also included a close-up of the lipstick I wore. I applied a dark berry lip (Palladio’s Juniper), then wiped it off to create a soft red lip stain. Lastly, I topped it off with my Jelly Pong Pong Lip Oil that I’ve written about here.  Glossy lips are back in style and ideal for protection against the harsh winter wind.

Black Turtleneck + Dark Lips + Pom Pom Heels

This is my ideal Christmas eve outfit! For starters, it stands out against all the bright red and green outfits that relatives will be donning. Second of all, it allows me to go nuts with accessories, like a hot chocolate brown lip or pom-pom heels.

If you are wondering where I found these whimsical statement heels, I snagged these from Thred Up for $15. They are like-new and originally cost $180!  If you are thinking of picking up a pair of statement heels for holiday parties, these are sultry for $60, these grey flats would go with everything, and you will be swarmed with compliments if you pick up these satin mules in any of the 3 colors!

This perfect teeth/skin photo is brought to you by Smile Brilliant Teeth Whitening and suffering from completing the Whole 30 diet (laughs). Since my black turtleneck and jeans are as basic as it gets, I played around with a chocolate brown lipstick with red undertones. If you are feeling bold enough to try this vampy lip, pick up Maybelline’s Super Stay Matte Ink Lip Color in “Protector” for $9. This formula will last hours through lots of wine and holiday treats. You might have the fight of your life removing it at the end of the night (laughs), so use a few micellar wipes and believe in yourself.

Holiday Poncho + Red Lips +Gold Heels

Obviously, the best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear (and wearing extra festive holiday ponchos). My mom sent me a Christmas care package filled with cozy and cheery clothes, like candy cane patterned leggings for lounging and this gingerbread poncho from TJ Maxx. While this one has since sold-out, you can pick up an elf-inspired one from Target here. I wore this poncho to an ornament-exchange party and it was a hit! To add a touch more sparkle to this traffic-stopping poncho, I slipped on my trusty clearance gold heels that I found for $14 at Aldo. If you are in the market for new metallic heels, I recommend these chunky heels from J.Crew. To polish off the look, I swiped on a classic red creamy lip by Kosas
